An Interview with Iseult Murphy

Welcome to The Five Question Interview series on Another Hartman Author! I decided it was time to pay it forward but didn’t know how. I don’t have any free books to give away. Nor do I have editing skills someone would covet. So The Five Question Interview was born! Its mission: to give back to the writing community one interview at a time. Without further adieu, let’s learn a little bit about:

What are your current writing projects?
Genre? Age group? Details, please!

I have several projects on the go, all aimed at adults. My second short story collection, RETURN TO HADES AND OTHER ADVENTURES, is due to launch on the 25th June. It’s full of fantasy, horror and science fiction stories dealing with space mutants, zombie private detectives and necromancers. In August, my horror novel, 7 WEEKS IN HELL, is due to be launched. It is the first book in the four part 7th Hell series, which follows the story of twin sisters and their involvement in a zombie takeover of Ireland.

I’ll be doing a cover reveal for it soon, and I’m very excited about that because I’m working with Keshia Erin of the Caliburn Photography Group, https://thecaliburnphotographygroup.wordpress.com/keshia-erin/, and the design is amazing.

I’m currently editing a fantasy novel, with the working title of ‘The Falcon, the Necromancer and the Witch’. It’s about a highwaywoman and the lengths she will go to get back her dead sister. I’m also editing a fantasy novella, which will be the first in a dragon elemental series. It’s about a woman who survives being burned at the stake, and sets out to discover what she is.

If that wasn’t enough, I’m writing the first draft of a fantasy novel, which features a magical gift and the end of the world. This is my novel for Richard Thomas’ Novel in a Year Course, and it is wonderful to get his help, as well as the feedback from the other people on the course.

When did you discover your love of writing?

When I was about seven, and I started my first fantasy novel.

Now it’s time for some Quick Questions!

What authors have inspired your writing?
Are they from a single genre or multiple genres?

I like to read nonfiction books, as well a lot of different genres in fiction, but the authors who most inspire my writing mainly come from the speculative fiction genres. Peter S Beagle made a huge difference to my life when I was about two and saw THE LAST UNICORN (also my first visit to the cinema), and his writing has been inspiring me ever since. Bram Stoker inspired my love of horror literature. Richard Matheson, John Wyndham, Michael Crichton, Neil Gaiman, Garth Nix, Jeff Vandermere, A.R Wise, Beth Cato and of course the king, J.R.R Tolkien.

Where do you write? At home? In a favorite coffee shop?
Or do you like to mix things up?

I write at home in the company of my PA (parrot assistant, she’s very good at shredding documents), five dogs, who model for my blog, and two cats, who run the show.

Iseult Murphy lives on the east coast of Ireland and is owned by five dogs, two cats, and a tiny parrot. When she isn’t tending to her furry (and feathery) overlords, she is usually scribbling something horrible into the walls, and occasionally her laptop. Magic and science are usually involved too. Her short stories have been published in over two dozen venues.
